Transferring an ISA to or from Barclays
All 7 of Barclays' adult Cash ISAs accept transfers in from other providers.
How to move an ISA to Barclays
- If you already bank with Barclays, you can open a cash ISA and transfer an existing ISA in through the Barclays app, Online Banking, over the phone or in a branch.
- The Barclays cash ISAs guide says that if you do not bank with Barclays yet, you need to book a branch appointment to open one of its cash ISAs.
- Barclays does not allow an Innovative Finance ISA or a Lifetime ISA to be transferred into a cash ISA.
- Money paid into an ISA in the current tax year must be transferred in full, while you can choose to move only part of the money paid in during previous years.
- A transfer in to a Barclays Flexible Cash ISA has to be made within the first 30 days of opening it.
- The Instant Cash ISA (Issue 1) accepts transfers in from other ISAs at any time, with no limit on how many transfers can be made.
How long a transfer takes
Barclays says a transfer in from another provider can take up to 15 working days, and you start earning interest once it has completed the transfer. Once a new provider asks, the Barclays Flexible Cash ISA terms say it sends the money within 5 working days, unless there is a reason to stop the transfer. gov.uk says ISA transfers should take no longer than 15 working days between Cash ISAs, and 30 calendar days for other types of transfer.
Moving an ISA away from Barclays
A Barclays Flexible Cash ISA can only be transferred out in full, and a transfer before the maturity date carries a charge. The charge is 90 days of tax-free interest for a 1 year term, 180 for 2 years, 270 for 3 years, 320 for 4 years and 365 for 5 years. Barclays says the charge could mean you get back less money than you paid into the ISA. You can move a Cash ISA from Barclays to another provider at any time. Ask the new provider to arrange the transfer: if you take the money out yourself, it leaves the ISA and paying it in again uses your allowance. A fixed rate ISA usually charges for leaving before the end of its term. See how ISA transfers work.
Transfer details checked on Barclays' own website on 9 October 2026.
Is the Barclays ISA flexible?
All 7 of Barclays' adult Cash ISAs are flexible, so you can take money out and put it back in the same tax year without using more of your allowance.
