Stocks and Shares ISA platforms compared
A Stocks and Shares ISA is a tax-free wrapper for investments such as funds, shares and ETFs. Most platforms charge a fee based on how much you hold, so the cheapest one for a small pot is rarely the cheapest for a large one. Who can open one
You need to be 18 or over and a UK resident to open an adult Stocks and Shares ISA. There is no upper age limit, and no requirement to already hold investments elsewhere, so it works equally as a first ISA or alongside a Cash ISA, an Innovative Finance ISA or a Lifetime ISA, as long as your total subscriptions across all of them stay within your overall annual ISA allowance.
Platform fee, fund fee and dealing charges
Investing through a Stocks and Shares ISA usually means paying up to three separate types of cost. The platform fee is what the platform charges for holding your account and is shown in the table above, either as a flat £/year, a percentage of your portfolio, or a mix of both. Fund and ETF costs are set by whoever manages the fund, taken out of its value automatically, and never appear as a separate charge on your statement. Dealing charges apply when you buy or sell an individual share, ETF or investment trust, and are usually a flat fee per trade rather than a percentage.
A platform that looks cheap on its account fee can still cost more overall if its dealing charges or fund range push you towards pricier options. Check the fund and share dealing column in the table above alongside the headline fee.
Risk and time horizon
A Stocks and Shares ISA invests your money rather than holding it as cash, so its value moves with the markets and can fall as well as rise, including below what you paid in. That risk is generally easier to accept the longer you plan to leave the money invested, since it gives any short-term falls more time to recover, though nothing about future performance is guaranteed. Money you expect to need within the next few years is usually better suited to a Cash ISA, where the balance cannot fall in value.
Ready-made portfolios or DIY
Some platforms only offer ready-made or managed portfolios, where a fund manager or algorithm chooses and rebalances your investments for you, usually for a higher combined fee. Others are DIY only: you choose every fund, share or ETF yourself, typically for a lower fee but more decisions to make. A number of platforms offer both. Neither approach is right or wrong; it depends on how much time and confidence you want to put into choosing investments yourself.
How to compare platforms
Start with how much you plan to hold and how you plan to invest, since fee structures reward different habits. A flat monthly or annual fee tends to suit larger portfolios, where it works out as a smaller percentage of the total. A percentage fee tends to suit smaller portfolios, since there is no minimum charge to absorb. If you plan to trade individual shares often, dealing charges matter more than they do for someone who buys a few funds and leaves them alone. Junior and Lifetime ISA availability, shown as chips in the table above, narrows the list further if you need one of those alongside a Stocks and Shares ISA.
If you already hold a Stocks and Shares ISA elsewhere, most platforms accept a transfer in, either "in specie" (your existing investments move across as they are) or as cash (everything is sold first, then reinvested once it arrives). An in-specie transfer avoids being out of the market while the transfer completes, but not every platform supports it for every investment, and some charge an exit fee to leave, which is worth checking against the new platform's fee before you move.
Whatever you choose, the figures in the table above are platform fees only. Fund costs and any dealing charges are on top, so use them alongside the platform fee, not instead of it, when working out what a portfolio will actually cost you to run.
Questions people ask
What is a Stocks and Shares ISA?
A Stocks and Shares ISA is a tax-free wrapper for investments: funds, shares, ETFs and investment trusts. You do not pay Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax on anything held inside it, and it uses part of your £20,000 annual ISA allowance, shared with any Cash ISA, Lifetime ISA or Innovative Finance ISA you also pay into.
What's the difference between a platform fee and a fund fee?
The platform fee is what the platform itself charges you for holding your account, shown in the table above. Fund fees (often called an ongoing charges figure) are set by whoever manages each fund or ETF you hold, and are taken out of the fund's value before it is priced, so they do not show up as a separate line on your platform statement. Both reduce your return, and both are worth checking.
Is a cheaper platform always better?
Not necessarily. The cheapest platform fee is only part of the total cost. Dealing charges, fund choice, whether the platform offers ready-made portfolios, and whether you actually use the features you are paying for all matter too. Compare the total picture for how you plan to invest, not the fee figure alone.
Do I pay tax on money inside a Stocks and Shares ISA?
No. Growth and income inside a Stocks and Shares ISA are free of Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax, including on dividends, whatever the value. Outside an ISA, gains above the £3,000 annual Capital Gains Tax exemption and dividends above the £500 dividend allowance are taxable, so the ISA wrapper matters more the larger your investments grow.
What happens to cash held in a Stocks and Shares ISA from 2027?
From 6 April 2027, interest on cash held inside a Stocks and Shares ISA or Innovative Finance ISA faces a new 22% charge, for all ages. This applies to cash sitting in the account, not to money invested in funds or shares. See what the Cash ISA limit means for the full set of 2027 changes.
Is my investment protected if the platform fails?
If an FCA-authorised platform fails, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme covers your investments up to £85,000 per person, per firm. This protects you against the platform itself failing, not against the value of your investments falling, which is a normal risk of investing.
