Transferring an ISA to or from Coventry Building Society

How to move an ISA to Coventry Building Society
- The easiest way to ask Coventry Building Society for a transfer from another provider is Online Services, or you can call or visit a branch and ask for an 'ISA transfer'.
- Coventry Building Society says to make sure the Coventry ISA being transferred into allows transfers in, and to check the terms of both ISAs for restrictions or charges.
- Savings from a cash ISA for the current tax year must be transferred in full, while savings from a previous tax year can be transferred in full or in part.
- A stocks and shares ISA with another provider can be transferred into a Coventry cash ISA, but Coventry Building Society asks to be contacted first so the savings keep their tax-free status.
- On the 6 Access ISA 1 Year, taking money out at least six times during the term means a charge of 50 days' interest on the balance being transferred, including closures.
- A flexible ISA allowance only applies to the specific ISA account, so transferring that ISA to another provider and closing it loses the allowance.
How long a transfer takes
Coventry Building Society says electronic transfers in can take up to seven business days, manual transfers up to 15 business days and stocks and shares transfers up to 30 calendar days. A Fixed Rate ISA needs its ISA transfer instructions within 14 calendar days of Coventry Building Society accepting the application, or while the account is open to new investors, whichever is longer. gov.uk says ISA transfers should take no longer than 15 working days between Cash ISAs, and 30 calendar days for other types of transfer.
Moving an ISA away from Coventry Building Society
Money from a cash ISA for the current tax year has to be transferred out in full, while money from a previous tax year can go in full or in part. Closing or transferring a Fixed Rate ISA before 31 December 2027, 2028 or 2029 costs the equivalent of 90, 180 or 270 days' interest on the account balance respectively. If the interest earned does not cover the charge, part of the charge is taken from the original deposit. You can move a Cash ISA from Coventry Building Society to another provider at any time. Ask the new provider to arrange the transfer: if you take the money out yourself, it leaves the ISA and paying it in again uses your allowance. A fixed rate ISA usually charges for leaving before the end of its term. See how ISA transfers work.
