Transferring an ISA to or from Nationwide
All 5 of Nationwide's adult Cash ISAs accept transfers in from other providers.
How to move an ISA to Nationwide
- You cannot transfer to a Nationwide ISA that is already open: you apply for a new one, and Nationwide asks during the application whether you want to transfer an ISA from another provider.
- You can apply to transfer online if your provider is on Nationwide's list, or in person at any branch, and new customers must apply for the Fixed Rate Cash ISA in a branch.
- Nationwide accepts cash ISAs and stocks and shares ISAs, and you have a cash ISA after the transfer because Nationwide does not offer stocks and shares ISAs.
- Money paid into your old ISA this tax year, with no withdrawals, must move in full, and earlier years' money can move in whole or in part if your old provider allows it.
- The Fixed Rate Cash ISA is funded during the application, either by an ISA transfer or from a Nationwide account, with a minimum of £1 and no top-ups afterwards.
- Interest is usually earned as if the money was paid in on the day Nationwide received your transfer instruction, unless a notice period or other restriction on the old ISA delays it.
How long a transfer takes
Cash ISA transfers into Nationwide take up to 15 working days from when Nationwide receives your request, and may take longer for funds with a notice period. For balances under £100,000, Nationwide uses Faster Payments once it has closed the ISA, and the new provider receives the money by the end of the next working day. gov.uk says ISA transfers should take no longer than 15 working days between Cash ISAs, and 30 calendar days for other types of transfer.
Moving an ISA away from Nationwide
If you move to another provider, you must transfer all the money paid into all your Nationwide cash ISAs this tax year, but can choose how much of earlier years' money to transfer. Early access charges still apply to a transfer: on a Fixed Rate Cash ISA they are equivalent to 60, 120, 180 or 300 days' interest for 1, 2, 3 or 5 year terms. There is no early access charge if you cancel a Fixed Rate Cash ISA within 14 days of opening it. You can move a Cash ISA from Nationwide to another provider at any time. Ask the new provider to arrange the transfer: if you take the money out yourself, it leaves the ISA and paying it in again uses your allowance. A fixed rate ISA usually charges for leaving before the end of its term. See how ISA transfers work.
Transfer details checked on Nationwide's own website on 9 October 2026.
