The short answer
- As many as the terms allow. gov.uk says you can take money out of an ISA at any time without losing any tax benefits, and sets no number of withdrawals. Your account's own terms set any limit or charge.
- Most easy access Cash ISAs set no limit. Some, often called limited access, or double, triple or six access, set a limit on how many withdrawals you make in a year. A few lower the interest for any month with a withdrawal.
- Going over a limit can lower the rate, cost a charge of a set number of days' interest, move the money to another account or mean closing it. The summary box has to say what happens, under "Can I withdraw money?".
- A withdrawal does not give allowance back unless the ISA is flexible and the money goes back in the same tax year. The allowance is £20,000, and the Cash ISA limit stays £20,000 from April 2027 after the Budget on 28 October 2026 decided not to cut it.
Is there a limit on ISA withdrawals?
Not in the ISA rules. The ISA Regulations 1998 say an ISA’s terms must let you instruct the provider to pay out your cash. gov.uk says you can take your money out of an ISA at any time without losing any tax benefits, and to check your ISA’s terms for any rules or charges for making withdrawals. Neither sets a number. HMRC’s guidance for ISA managers says investors have the right to ask their manager to withdraw their investments, or part of them if the manager offers partial withdrawal. So how many withdrawals you can make, and what each one costs, comes down to the account’s own terms.
Most easy access Cash ISAs set no limit. Some, often called limited access accounts, or named after the number of withdrawals they allow, such as double, triple or six access, limit how many times a year you can take money out before the rate falls, a charge applies or the account moves or closes. Notice and fixed rate Cash ISAs restrict access in other ways, and a Lifetime ISA has rules of its own: see can you take money out of an ISA.

Which easy access ISAs limit withdrawals?
Of the 64 accounts in our easy access Cash ISA table, checked on the providers’ own sites between 6 October 2026 and 30 October 2026, 16 limit the number of withdrawals, or of days with a withdrawal, in a year or a term. Another 2 lower the interest for any month in which you take money out. The other 46 set no limit on the number of withdrawals, although an account without one can still set a minimum withdrawal, a daily limit on cash, or a short wait after opening before the first withdrawal.
The table lists the 18 accounts with a limit, highest rate first. Each rule is our summary of the provider’s terms, with the date we checked it and a link to the provider’s page. A second line, where there is one, is our note on the account’s rates.

What happens if you go over the limit?
It depends on the account, and the table shows each one’s rule. Going over the limit can:
- lower the rate, for the rest of the year or the term, or until the account’s anniversary
- cost a charge, worked out as a number of days’ interest
- move the money to a different account
- mean closing the account, where the terms allow no more withdrawals
Accounts that lower the interest for any month with a withdrawal work differently. There is no allowance of withdrawals at the full rate: each month with a withdrawal earns the lower rate for that month.
An illustration. This is not any account’s terms, and the rates are not forecasts. It assumes £10,000 in an account paying an illustrative 4% AER, and a withdrawal of £1,000 halfway through the year that goes over the limit. The sums use simple interest and assume the rate otherwise stays the same.
| What happens after the limit | Cost in the illustration |
|---|---|
| A charge of 30 days' interest on the £1,000 taken out | £3.29 |
| A charge of 120 days' interest on the £1,000 taken out | £13.15 |
| The rate falls to 1% for one month, on the £9,000 left | £22.50 |
| The rate falls to 1% for the last six months of the year, on the £9,000 left | £135.00 |
On these numbers, six months at the lower rate costs £135.00, far more than either charge, because the lower rate applies to the whole balance while each charge here applies only to the amount taken out. So what happens after the limit matters as much as the limit itself.
Do limited access ISAs pay more?
Not always. In our table, the highest rate on an account that limits withdrawals is 4.36% AER, and the highest on one that does not is 4.86% AER. Here the best rate came without a limit. Rates change, and some include a bonus for a set period or depend on conditions, so read each account’s notes before comparing. A limit costs nothing while you stay within it, so the trade is any extra rate against the chance of needing more withdrawals than the account allows. Current rates for every account, limited or not, are in our easy access Cash ISA table.
Where do you find the withdrawal limit?
In the account’s summary box. FCA rules say a promotion that invites you to apply for a savings account must include a summary box in a set form, and the same chapter of the FCA’s rules covers promotions for cash deposit ISAs. The box’s row headed “Can I withdraw money?” has to explain how money can be taken out, including any conditions or consequences. The FCA’s notes add that it should give details if withdrawing reduces or removes the interest you are entitled to, or brings a charge.
Where the rate depends on conditions, such as how many withdrawals you make, FCA guidance says the “What is the interest rate?” row should show the rate when all conditions are met and the rate when one or more are not. The rules also say the lowest rate must not be shown less prominently than the others.
The summary box is only a summary. The terms and conditions hold the detail, such as whether a transfer out, closing the account or an interest payment counts as a withdrawal.
Does closing or transferring count as a withdrawal?
On some limited access accounts it does. In the table, 5 accounts count a transfer out, or closing the account, against their limit, so moving or closing one of those can use up a withdrawal or bring the lower rate or a charge.
To move an ISA to another provider, gov.uk says to contact the provider you want to move to and fill out an ISA transfer form. If you withdraw the money yourself instead, it says you will not be able to reinvest that part of your tax-free allowance again. It also says transfers between Cash ISAs should take no longer than 15 working days, and that a provider may charge for a transfer. See how an ISA transfer works.
Does taking out interest count as a withdrawal?
Some Cash ISAs can pay interest out to another account instead of adding it to the ISA. HMRC’s guidance says income paid away from a flexible ISA counts as a withdrawal, which can be replaced without counting towards the subscription limit. Whether an interest payment also counts towards an account’s withdrawal limit is set by the account’s terms. Interest paid out leaves the ISA, as monthly or annual ISA interest explains.
Does a withdrawal use up your ISA allowance?
No, but it does not give allowance back either, unless the ISA is flexible. HMRC’s guidance says that for an ISA that is not flexible, the amount paid in is not reduced by a later withdrawal. gov.uk gives this example. Your allowance is £20,000 and you put £10,000 into an ISA in the 2026/27 tax year, then take out £3,000. You can then pay in £13,000 more in the same tax year if the ISA is flexible, or £10,000 if it is not.
So unlimited withdrawals and a flexible ISA are different things. An account can let you take money out as often as you like without letting you put it back beyond what is left of your allowance. In our table, 35 of the 64 easy access Cash ISAs are flexible, including 13 of the 18 with a limit, and gov.uk says your provider can tell you if your ISA is flexible. In a flexible ISA the money has to go back in the same tax year, and HMRC’s guidance says cash taken out to cover fees, charges or penalty charges cannot be replaced without counting towards the limit. See how a flexible ISA works and flexible Cash ISA rates.
Money you take out and keep in an ordinary savings account earns interest outside the ISA. gov.uk says your allowances for earning interest before you pay tax on it include your Personal Allowance, the starting rate for savings and your Personal Savings Allowance. Interest above them is taxed, and HM Treasury says the rates on savings income will be 24%, 44% and 49% from 6 April 2027. The Cash ISA limit stays £20,000 from April 2027, after the Budget on 28 October 2026 decided not to cut it. See savings tax 2027.
Questions people ask
Is there a limit on how many times you can withdraw from a Cash ISA?
Not in the ISA rules. gov.uk says you can take money out of an ISA at any time without losing any tax benefits, and to check your ISA's terms for any rules or charges. Most easy access Cash ISAs set no limit, while limited access accounts set a limit on how many you make in a year. See easy access Cash ISA rates.
What happens if you make more withdrawals than an ISA allows?
It depends on the account. Going over the limit can lower the rate, cost a charge of a set number of days' interest, move the money to a different account or mean closing the account. FCA rules say the summary box should give details if a withdrawal reduces the interest you are entitled to or brings a charge.
Does closing or transferring an ISA count as a withdrawal?
On some limited access accounts it does: their terms count a transfer out, or closing the account, against the limit. To move an ISA, gov.uk says to contact the provider you want to move to and fill out an ISA transfer form, because money you withdraw yourself cannot use that part of your allowance again. See how an ISA transfer works.
Can you put money back into an ISA after a withdrawal?
Yes, but only a flexible ISA lets you do it without using more allowance, and only in the same tax year. In an ISA that is not flexible, money you pay back in counts as a new payment. Your provider can tell you if your ISA is flexible. See how a flexible ISA works.
Does taking out interest count as an ISA withdrawal?
HMRC's guidance says income paid away from a flexible ISA counts as a withdrawal, which can be replaced without counting towards the subscription limit. Whether an interest payment counts towards an account's withdrawal limit is set by its terms. See monthly or annual ISA interest.
Where can you find an ISA's withdrawal limit?
In the summary box on the provider's page for the account. FCA rules require one in a promotion that invites you to apply for a savings account, and its "Can I withdraw money?" row has to explain how money can be withdrawn, with any conditions or consequences. The terms and conditions give the full detail.
